Winter seems to be lingering. No sooner were we done with the ice, than the snow came. The one nice thing about this snow was gone that same day! So before I slid my way to work that morning, I wanted to try to get some good bird pictures with the snow. If we're going to have it, I might as well use it to my advantage!

Snow just makes the picture just a little bit better.

I could never get close enough to capture the doves, so the finches had to do.

I have always loved feeding the birds in the winter and the hummingbirds in the summer. I can't WAIT for my hummers to come back!

The morning that our power came back on, I was wrapped up in a blanket on the couch, watching tv and catching up on emails/work. I heard a bang and saw a bird bounce off the patio door. I didn't get up, because...well, it was a bird. It was kinda big, so I assumed a morning dove and figured after it got its bearing back, it would fly off. The husband went over there and asked what he should do with the bird. It was pretty big and really pretty. So that peaked my interest and I went over to check it out.

I had never seen a bird like this one before and it was definately not a morning dove. I text a picture to my mom and she didn't know either and didn't have her bird book handy, but said it looked like some type a hawk. Off to Google I went!

Turns out it's Kessler Hawk. Appears to be a juvenile also. I had never seen one before, much less in my yard! I would assume it was going after a small finch and the finch took a right and the hawk didn't and slammed into the window. ;) Pretty cool though. After a few minutes, it hopped up onto the wheel and shortly after that flew off to continue his hunt.

Wait, wha?

Remember when I said we saw more eagles in captivity than out? Well, I discovered something. I noticed a video that was posted to the state parks facebook page. And and I was watching it, I could have swore I saw eagles in the video. So, I decided to get my picture back out and zoom way in...guess what I discovered? Eagles...LOTS AND LOTS of eagles! HUNDREDS of eagles! I assumed this flock that I saw were seagulls. Looks like it, right?

Until I zoom in...

If you look for the black bodies, you'll see the white heads. In with all of them are seagulls and snow geese, so you have to look a little harder, but you'll eventually start picking them out. Amazing!

Reelfoot animals pt 2

After visiting the state park nature center, we started venturing around to other parts of the lake. THATS'S when we saw 2 flying overhead and found a spot to pull over. Luckily there was a pier there and I was able to catch a glimpse of them over the water. It was worth the trip right there. (Notice the REAL ducks in the water too! Ha!

And then it landed. I'm assuming on a sand bar or something, I'm not really sure. But it was really cool.

DSC_4606 web

I know people that see them all the time. But when you don't, you tend to appreciate them a little bit more. This was an awesome day and punk #2 has asked me several times when we're going back!

As we were leaving, we saw this massive flock of seagulls. It was crazy! I have no idea how many birds were out there, but it was cool to see. The one thing I try to do everyday is appreciate the little things. They may be pain in the butt birds, but God put them here for a reason. Appreciate everything, because it can be gone in the blink of an eye!

I love my birdies. My kitten also loves my birdies! This will be a problem! Imagine that. Sneaky has realized she can jump from the top of the chicken coop to the tree with the feeder in it! :( Needless to say, she's not been outside lately!

DSC_4497 web

Now that I've got another telephoto, I've been enjoying grabbing a few pictures when I can.

DSC_4494 web

I have to chuckle when I hear people talking about the "redbirds"...I've always known they were cardinals, but they are apparently redbirds around here.

I don't care what they're called, they are one of my favorites. So bright and pretty on drab winter days!

Since moving back into the country last summer, we've been talking about having chickens and fresh eggs. I don't care what anyone says, fresh eggs are the best. So we found a coop and bought some chicks!

So far so good, the kids love them...let's see how much they love them when they're cleaning the coop. ;)

The dog has completely surprised me. She "herds" them with her nose and they'll go where she points them. Kinda strange for a lab, but at least she's gentle!

Priceless shot and one of my favorites. Hopefully in a few months we'll be enjoying some fresh and tasty eggs!

Snowy day, pt 3

It took a while, but I finally got a few good birdy pictures...and a dog. :)

DSC_0001 web

This snow day was the next day and totally unexpected. It showed almost 2 inches in about 45 minutes. It was literally raining snow!

DSC_0005 web

She just wanted someone to play with her! There were no takers. :)

The snow made the cardinals pop!

It was gone by mid morning and I'm hoping for the year!

Lake fun

The boys were able to spend spring break at the lake since their uncle isn't working at the moment. I didn't get much argument out of them. And why is it that when we have a week to ourselves, we're too busy to do anything?! :)

I really hate taking pictures in full sun. I know sometimes you just have to do it, but the harsh shadows really irritate me! I tried to soften them with some haze, but I'm still not happy about it. (I've been told I'm too picky ;)

And release...

This hawk dove into the water near us and came up with his lunch...and then flew right over us. Unfortunately I did not have my zoom on, so this was as close as I could get.

Better view of the fish.

And then it snowed...

Not sure where the last week has gone...laundry still waiting
to be folded, pictures still needing framed, floors still needing
to be washed...and here it is almost the middle of the month. Did
I sleep through the last week?! Because it just flew by! And now
I'm 5 days away from Christmas break and the kids being home for
the next 2 1/2 weeks...well, scratch that...they're off school
today. :( I'm hoping they go back tomorrow!!!

We had been hearing about the snow coming for the last few days.
It was supposed to start after midnight Saturday night. It didn't.
It started about 12 hours later. And for some reason they did not
brine our roads, so by late afternoon, even though we had less
than an inch, our roads were awful. Coming home from the band concert
was pretty hairy, so I was prepared for the upcoming announcement
that there would not be school on Monday. It's pretty for the day
and then it's time to go...and start praying for school tomorrow!

It's 7am and only MY kids are out in the freezing cold!

Gotta love the kool-aid mustache at 7am!

Even the birds are cold!

2 boys and a bird!

Took the boys down to the bridge for some pictures...and they
find a pig-nosed turtle. Really, a pig-nosed turtle!! Who knew
they were in the creek beds?! I could see a box turtle, they're
everywhere....but a pig-nose? Only my kids! And of course
they want to bring it home and "keep" it. That's not happening,
so they put it in the pond, where I'm sure it'll be much
happier and probably a little cooler than the almost-dry
creek bed! Back to the pictures...these turned out really nice.

Side note:
This one is an exception to the "not too much" processing that I
mentioned in my last post about too much or too little processing.
I like the "old west" process that I applied, as it really brings out
the wood in the bridge. It doesn't work on all pictures and I even
tried it on the one of both boys together in this same spot and it
didn't work.

Holy moly those eyes...

....and the bird. No clue as to what it is, I just happened
to be looking out the front door when it flew into
the redbud tree. Picture is terrible because it's
slightly out of focus, but I was afraid it was going
to fly away when I opened the door to go out there.
I don't think it's an oriole, but then again, I'm too
lazy to just try and look it up!

p.s. I bet you were expecting a picture of the turtle!
Nope, the picture I took wasn't the greatest and
they released it in the pond too quick. Maybe if
they see it again we'll get one!

What a beautifully, un-humid (spring-like) day! It makes spending all day cleaning yesterday so worth it! I spent the morning hanging out with my butterfly bushes in the cool morning air. I probably would have just ignored all the moths...because they're always there...but the creme de la creme showed up...the Monarch! I've been waiting for him/her to show up for a while now and it picked a beautiful day to show. I'm not even sure I can pick a favorite. There were many more...maybe I'll load more tomorrow while all the boys are hanging out together. Being the only girl with 6 guys in the house for the next few days gives me the right to hide out! :)

These 2 are really cool (probably my favorite)
because the moon is in the background.
I focused on the moon in the bottom picture,
which blurs the butterfly in the foreground.

The little finches are coming to enjoy the the
sunflowers that are finally going to seed.

Still working on a decent hummingbird picture.
These were shot thru the patio screen door.

Sunset the other night.

Sunday boredom

We've been telling the boys we'd take them out to Bedford lake to fish/canoe for the last week. But due to my poison ivy/chigger issues (and now a spider bite I had thought was just a mosquito bite that was very itchy) ALONG with the heat, we've just put it off. So today we decided to kill a few hours. Unfortunately when we got out there, the wind was really blowing, so we nixed the canoeing bit. A little too much of a workout, especially since I wasn't the one taking them in the canoe!

Biggest fish I've seen caught at
Bedford Lake

Hunter got his lure stuck on a dead, stinky
turtle! Daddy to the rescue!

Caught these beauties on the side of the road,
as we were heading home.

The kids like to "talk" to the peacocks when we drive
by, but luckily since we were so close today, they
were quiet. The sound is really obnoxious.
From them AND the birds!

Saw this one as we were driving by. Hit the brakes
and I ran back, but it was already heading into
the corn field.
